Into the Negatives

Unfortunately, there is a separation between who we are and who we want to be. I don't think of it a negative or a positive, but more of who we are and what we think the world wants from us. The image has a tear down the middle that separates the fully-colored right side from the negative on the left. The girl in the center is unifying both sides. She is embracing her negative by diving fully deep into it. She is no longer afraid of who she is and what good that could bring.
This image is one of twenty in a series about secrets, revealing the negatives and positives of a situation visually and conceptually. The image of the girl is a free stock photo, and the tear was taken from another free stock image of torn paper. I played with blending modes and applied the difference filter on the torn paper layer. The negative of the girl's skin is a happy accident that adds to the photo by making her a gradient. It parallels the dynamic nature of human thought, blurring the line between negative and positive both visually and conceptually.
